iCelsius Thermometer Plugs Into Your iDevice

By David Ponce

Yet another old world instrument falls prey to the hungry Apple machine, needlessly reinventing itself simply because it can. Thermometers have been around for a while and are pretty good at what they do already. But with the iCelsius Pro thermometer probe, they now can do even more. Like provide precise temperature readings with a high sampling rate over a long period of time. This allows you to create graphs, setup alerts and even export your temperature data so you can pore over your fluctuations in endless geek-worthy detail. Granted, the fact that the iCelsius Pro can provide accurate temperature readings in the ranges of -22 degrees F to 302 degrees F (-30 degrees C to 150 degrees C) means it can be used with more than the human body. This does in fact make it marginally more useful than a traditional thermometer.

It’s $54 and will ship in a couple of weeks.

Cup Holder Mount Lets You Browse While Your Drive — Unfortunately

By David Ponce

This is an accident waiting to happen. Which is entertaining when the accident involves the idiot and a tree. It’s less fun however when an innocent, non texting-while-driving person gets hit by one of the types of people who will want to buy the above product. Sure, there may be those who will get the Satechi SCH-121 Cup Holder Mount (which accommodates tablets and phones alike) in order to use the devices while the car is stationary. Like waiting for the missus while she shops. But let’s be honest, a bunch of others will get this with every intention of driving while playing Angry Birds. You know who you are.

At $30, it’s easy to be tempted. But like drinking and driving, it’s not because it’s easy that it’s right…

MoneyMaker Camera Strap Lets You Tote 3 SLRs

By David Ponce

Looking like it should be holstering pistols, the The MoneyMaker Multi-Camera harness lets you pack a different kind of heat. Photographic heat. (Lord, that’s the worst joke of the week, someone shoot me.) The two shoulder straps let you carry a camera on each side while a D-ring on each allows you to string yet another thinner strap to your front. So you end up with a camera on each side and one in front. I’m assuming that professional photographers would like something like this, what with them spending an entire day shooting a wedding, getting tired and things like that. “The cameras are kept inline with the body and the weight centered over the upper back and shoulders taking strain off the lower back. ”

The MoneyMaker is made from oil tanned, top grain leather and the asking price is $175.

Now, I’d really like it if someone could tell me in what situation three different cameras might be needed.

[CES 2012] Gametel Controller Brings Physical Gamepad To Mobile Devices

By David Ponce

Another day, another Bluetooth connected gamepad for mobile devices. Each iteration tweaks the features a little bit, but I did manage to get my hands on this particular one, the Gametel. It’s sturdily built and has an expendable clasp that can accomodate more than just one phone. As long as your device is less than 5 inches in width, you can have it sitting right above the controller. You can of course use this with tablets as well, but you’ll have more of a console/controller interaction rather than that of a mobile gaming device. And unlike previous devices I’ve seen, this one is compatible with around 150 games.

This accessory has been available for a while in Europe and should make it across the pond sometime in Q1 of this year. You can expect a similar price than its European counterpart, and that’s around $60.

iDigitip, For When Meaty Thumbs Got You Typing Askew

By David Ponce

Some people have large hands, sometimes made up of nothing but thumbs… This is a fact of life. And one can only imagine their dismay at the constant miniaturization of today’s electronics. How are they to communicate? How are they to live? They don’t have to remain dyslexic forever. The iDigitip is a simple accessory that fits at the end of a finger and is tipped with a smaller foam nub that works on touchscreens as well as on actual physical buttons (obviously). They come in packs of two, so you can even double-thumb your way through those texts like a tween in no time.

It’s $20.

Swivl Camera Tracking Device Is Ready For Prime-Time

By David Ponce

Facetime is great and everything, but having to hold your phone in one hand severely hampers your ability to do pretty much anything else. Put it down somewhere and you can’t really go anyplace outside its field of view. To the rescue comes the Swivl, an accessory which securely holds your phone and tracks your every movement. It pans (left and right movements) and tilts (up and down movements) and will keep you in the frame as long as you are wearing its beacon. It’s not limited to the iPhone of course; as long as it fits in the holder you’re good to go. It’s available for pre-order right now and will ship out in early 2012 with an estimated price of $159.

Tis The Megaphone Your iPhone’s Been Waiting For

By David Ponce

This… now this is sure to get you some conversations. It’s a passive ceramic amplifier made specifically for the iPhone. As you can plainly see, it’s in the shape of a horn and contains a docking area at the top that will fit your Apple music device snugly. As musical horns do, the MegaPhone will amplify the sound coming from the iPhone’s speakers due to the specific shape of its walls. It also rests on a thin wooden structure which is meant to raise it above any surface and allow it to vibrate more freely. We’re not sure if the video below is really representative of the level of amplification, but really, it doesn’t matter: it looks awesome. The MegaPhone is compatible with iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and costs 400 Euros. That’s for the black or white version, while a gold plated model will set you back 600 Euros.

Add A Flash To Your Older iPhone

By Chris Scott Barr

One of my favorite features on my iPhone 4 is one of the most basic. I’m talking of course about the flash. The addition of one little LED makes a world of difference on the pictures. Yes, having a better camera helps as well, but being able to capture low-light situations is wonderful. Well now owners of the previous iPhones can also have this handy feature.

The iFlash (how original) is a small device that plugs into the docking port of your iPhone. A simple on/off switch kicks on the LED and lights up your subject. The best part is that there is no need for batteries, as it draws power from the phone itself. The $40 price tag is a bit excessive for what it does, so you might just want to wait until you have the opportunity to upgrade your phone.

Bringrr Ensures That You Never Leave Your Phone At Home

By Chris Scott Barr

Cell phone have, for better or worse, become an important part of our daily lives. Which is why it really sucks when you get somewhere, only to realize your phone is sitting at home, miles away. I’ve found my own way around that, as I use mine to play all of the music in my car, so I notice right away if I’ve left it in the house. However, if you prefer to listen to the radio, that’s not a viable solution. Instead, you might consider this rather simple device.

Bringrr is a small Bluetooth accessory that detects when your phone is nearby. If you start your car and the phone isn’t present, it will emit a sound to let you know. It’s small, rather cheap ($35) and helps to ensure that you never leave home (or anywhere else, for that matter) without your phone.
